Malayalam on android Mobiles

Wow… Finally i can read Malayalam on my samsung spica i5700 (android 2.1 OS). You can also enable Malayalam (most probably all non latin languages) by installing Opera Mini Beta 5 for android. Opera Mini Beta 5 is avaiable in android market.

Once downloaded do the following tweak to enable Malayalam

1. Open Opera Mini Beta 5 browser

2. Type “config:” (without quotes and don’t forget to type colon at the end of the command) on address bar and press OK

3. Change entry for ‘Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts’ to ‘Yes’.

That’s it. Now you can read all unicode Malayalam websites(except atomic chillu characters)  from your mobile phone.

Just tried with Malayalamanorama…..hmm…no, its not working for me…

  14. June 13, 2011 at 3:14 PM

@ Jyothi and ZAM : Malayala Manorama is not using unicode fonts. It uses its own ASCII font to render Malayalam. By using the above hack you cannot read Malayala Manorama on android phones.

I’m using opera mobile but When i am typing config: in address bar, it says web page not available

      • July 4, 2011 at 3:57 PM

AFAIK, the above hack will work only on Opera Mini and not on Opera Mobile.

Thanks Anoop for your comment about Malayalam Songs, As you suggested would like to have an audio only version but of legal issues and the difficulty to find reliable mp3 it was difficult to do that. I know watching video will be difficult at this point of time but technology is moving faster so this barriers won’t be an issue soon.

I appreciate your suggestion and will take into account and look into how technically, we could acheive it. Thanks for the rating but it would have been encouraging for us if people like you have given a better support for a non-profit project.

Anyway its always good to have a suggestion from great people like you. Thanks.

Is there any possibility to extract only audios from a youtube videos. It would help you find reliable mp3s. Just a thought.

      • July 6, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Yes anoop, thats a good thought and i was even thinking of it. Will try for it.. Thanks.

      • July 7, 2011 at 7:43 PM

I looked into extracting mp3 from youtube, its possible. But legally youtube doesn’t permits it. So i would think of some other alternatives.

Is it possible to add a Malayalam keyboard to native Android OS?

I have successfully created a Malayalam Keyboard that is available in every app on Nokia N9. Nokia N9 native browser displays Malayalam pages like Manorama, Mangalam, etc.

I decided to not follow any standard keyboard layouts for Malayalam because it is so confusing. My layout is simple (I think, comments welcome).

I even added the Rupee symbol ₹. Maybe the first mobile VKB that can type ₹ :-).

Now Nokia N9 can type in Malayalam – SMS, Email, Games – all apps. Just switch the keyboard with a swipe to Malayalam, English, Swype, etc.

    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79492&page=9

A few of my friends with Android and iPhone have asked me if I could do this for their phones. I don’t like the idea of creating an App for Malayalam typing (I think there are already some).

Anybody have any clue how to create and/or add a language keyboard for native Android, iOS (maybe even Windows) operating systems.

    Thanks

    Aby

thanks, what will do to read Chillu letters Malayalam on android.. also. Malayalam supported application..

to change your phone language to Malayalam Loce : >> download “morelocale 2” from android market, after installing it go to Custom Language. type language code ml and country code IN .. your phone will be localized to Malayalam. so. you can read Malayalam on Facebook too. (galaxy S users needs to download Fontomizer SP from market and install Malayalam fonts, Akshar,Kartika,Anjaliold lipi) – NO need to root your phone for this. just install) –
(If your phone is rooted, you can install any Malayalam fonts TTF files directly copy to system/ fonts folder via using file explorer apps – THATS IS ONLY FOR ROOTED PHONE remember it.)
but. still. chillu letters issue. what we have do to fix this. please find solution for atomic chillu letters malayalam issue on android!

    thanks
